When Samuel is in the bath, his two main objectives are standing up so that he may slip and plunge to his death, and getting Daddy to read this bath book as many times as possible. We bought him new bath toys but he gives them only a passing interest; he has eyes only for the duck book. If I give it back to him after reading it, he grabs it and holds it out to me with an insistent look and grunts "buh! Buh!" until i relent and read it to him a fortieth time.

Yesterday we celebrated Samuel's birthday, so today the house was filled with new toys and discarded wrapping paper. Any experienced parent will be able to guess which our children found more alluring. Bea invented a game in which the wrapping paper was to be placed in a gift bag in order of increasing size. If a piece was deemed too large, or she felt like it, the bag was emptied onto the floor. By naptime most of the paper was shredded to make the size more uniform and therefore more pleasing to her, and she was throwing a tantrum while making an accidental wrapping paper angel by lying on her back in the snowdrift of colorful scraps and flailing her limbs vigorously in fury. Love that girl. And her brother. Happy first birthday, Samuel!
