This is still one of Beatrice's favorite games, although her imagined scenarios have grown more complex since she first began to put the felt figures in their felt scenes. Now the characters have relationships and favorite activities. And she wants to play with them without any clothes.

Beatrice's love affair with ducks continues unabated. We went to Idaho for the weekend, and on the way we stopped at a random roadside old fashioned candy store (the Nut Factory). Beatrice was very interested in all the treats, and we had a good time exploring the store together … Until we encountered these stuffed ducks. From then on, we could proceed no further. She refused to budge from her admiring watchpost, just barely obeying her father's repeated admonition not to touch the fluffy yellow things.

Samuel loves baths! When he was first introduced to them, he would fuss a little as the shock of being placed into the water hit him. Now he loves it and is peacefully happy even when first placed into the tub. He has figured out how to splash and will do so almost immediately upon entering the water. He seems mystified and amused at the sound and water droplets arising from his own activity, blinking and breathing quickly with exhilaration as though I were the one playfully splashing bath water on his face.

Lately this scaffolding has been erected around our office building. I thought it was for washing the windows, but it isn't. It has remained mysteriously present but empty for weeks now, the only sign of life thus far a work crew I spotted at the base of one of the poles standing in a guarded circle and discussing jail time.

These days we often have a brief window where both children are in the process of being prepared for bed. When this happens, we often wind up reading a story together in Bea's room. Sometimes Kelly reads it and sometimes I read it and sometimes Samuel looks at the book and sometimes he just looks at his sister and sometimes Bea climbs all over is and sometimes she is still but it's always a pretty special family time. We are a family that loves reading and loves being together.

This is one of my new favorite dinners. It's shiitake mushrooms grilled with a red wine vinaigrette tossed in a salad of warm quinoa, spinach, and feta cheese cubes. So very good-soft, delicate flavors, kind of salty, mushrooms are a little chewy and smoky. Have I mentioned lately that Kelly is a magician in the kitchen?
