There is one day a year where all the employees at CN head out to Willows Run to play golf (or mini-golf) for the afternoon. It is a best ball tournament with cash prizes and everything. I took a golf course in college that consisted of a dozen or so of us standing around in the gym hitting golf balls into a large tarp. I had no idea if I was a good golfer or not, but after two years of mini-golf, I decided to go for it on the full golf course. First, I was a little nervous because my team consisted of two other gals and Bob Nuber, as in, the company is half named after you Bob Nuber. Oh geeze. It turned out to be great fun!
Here is our scorecard. I got to be the score keeper:

Here is our team:

Left to right: Lillie, Krystyna, Bob and Kelly.
We ended the game 8 over par. Sort of bad in a best ball tournament, but around the 7th hole I started to figure out how to golf! It was really fun! I might even golf on a day when the company isn’t paying next summer. It IS a nice walk, if nothing else, and it’s fun to be outside and spending time getting to know some coworkers a little better.

Kelly and I helped teach Sunday school yesterday. The day’s Bible lesson was from Daniel; it was the story of how Daniel and his three friends chose to drink water and eat vegetables in Babylon instead of eating the meat and rich food that the king offered them.
So we talked to the kids about how some friends are a good influence in their lives and others aren’t, and how they, like Daniel, can help their friends make good choices. To help make it concrete, we asked them to think of the friends they have who help them make good choices and those who don’t.
When asked about friends who weren’t a good influence, one little boy looked up at me and said “I have a friend who said ‘God is the S-word.’”
“The S-word?“ I must have looked a little incredulous. These kids are in third grade.
“Oh, not S-H-I-T,” he said, spelling it with practiced ease. “The other S-word.”
All the boys suddenly went quiet for a moment at his reference to the other S-word. And my mind went into overdrive. The other S-word? What were they talking about? Was my vocabulary of vulgar and/or profane language actually aging to the point where I didn’t know all the cusses of the new generation?
Kids can spot a phony a mile away. There was no point in pretending I knew what was going on. I swallowed my pride.
“The, uh, other S-word?” I managed.
“Yeah,” said the boy. “Stupid.”

I know many of you are used to having Jonathan update his livejournal and flickr photostream and that’s maybe not happening as much lately. Sorry about that. Here’s a brief explanation:
1. We got married. It took a few days (okay weeks and months) for us to plan things.
2. I moved into the house. Then we moved around the furniture (and then I moved it around a bit more while Jonathan was out one day).
3. For Memorial Day weekend this year, we cleaned up/dreamed up a plan for our yard. You saw the photos on that one.
4. He’s replaced the closet doors in one of the bedrooms.
5. He’s painted the bathroom in our bedroom and added some decorative touches.
6. He remodeled our hallway bathroom (complete with ripping out the vanity and vinyl flooring and replacing it with tile and a pedestal sink and also installing a new mirror and lights and medicine cabinet).
7. We hang out a little.
8. We’ve added teaching Sunday School to our activities (and we LOVE it-they’re great!).
9. He’s currently painting the guestroom. Photos on that later.
Here’s a photo rundown of the bathroom remodel….in case you were wondering.
It started out looking something like this (yellow walls, sort of plaid floor, weirdly scratched up vanity):

Then Jonathan got it down to this:

Which is when we did this:

So he could do this:

And with some help from Jacob, got to this:

Which ended up looking like this:

and this:

I know, it’s completely impressive! Who knew he was such a handy fellow?!?!
A big thanks to Jacob who helped with the tiling! We really appreciate it! And of course, Thank You Jonathan for being willing to completely change the sink and the floors all because the existing sink and flooring clashed with the paint I really liked.

My sister left this morning on a plane similar to the above photo…first to a glorious layover in Chicago then to an even longer, more glorious layover in London and should arrive in Leeds sometime tomorrow morning (our time). We had a family dinner together last night and generally hung out and helped with the final sorting of the belongings. It was good times. We’re going to miss you Rachel! Sometimes I’m sad because it seems like we’ve only just gotten into the friend stage of sisterhood (don’t get me wrong, it’s not like we meet up for shopping or lattes or anything, but we DO hang out quite a bit and you know, there’s hijinx).
Here are some of my favorite photos of us lately:
At Sushiland

After our short drive to find lavender lattes:

Playing around with a giant bouncy ball we bought at Target because, well, now we’ve got our own money and don’t have to beg mom for things:

Self-portraiture at Hurricane Ridge:

Grandpa’s birthday:

Trying REALLY hard not to smile (and looking a little ticked) at my bridal shower:

In the rainy Butchardt Gardens:

Dinner with the fam for Uncle Jim and Aunty Mar’s anniversary:

We sure love you, Rachel. We’ll miss you and we’re praying for you! We know without a doubt that this is where God has called and I know that regardless of whether things are hard or easy for you at Leeds, you will tackle every issue with your usual grace and sometimes, straight-forward, tell it like it is candor. You can do it!

Okay Leah, I’ll play along. Here we go. Leah has tagged me in a Silly Six. Here goes….
The rules are:
1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Mention the rules.
3. Tell six unspectacular quirks of yours.
4. Tag six bloggers by linking.
5. Leave a comment for each blogger.
Six quirks….just six?!?!?
1. I notice people’s hands/fingers/fingernails first when I meet them. I have this thing that you can tell quite a bit about somebody that way. It also sometimes gives me the creeps and makes me think I’m the weirdo staring at your hand. It’s not your ring I’m looking at. I’m checking to see if you have dirt under your nails-will you be willing to do yardwork with me?
2. I read for fun. I read books that I classify as “television that you read.” That’s RIGHT! We don’t have television reception but instead of using the time I’d otherwise be watching television to serve or do anything productive, I read British chicklit (among other things). It’s ridiculous.
3. Jonathan and I really do argue over who gets to do the dishes everynight. He is tricky and has some cunning logic so watch out if you have him over for dinner. If you don’t get to the sink fast enough, you could be missing out on the joy of washing dishes for the night!
4. If I had to chose, I would rather listen to and speak German than French-even though German isn’t a UN language….
5. I really love holidays. All of them. Even flag day and grandparents’ day (that one’s coming up my friends!), but especially Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year’s, Easter, Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day and Armed Services Day and everything in between. I also really like decorating for holidays and cookies.
6. My wedding dress is off-white (we’re not talkin’ diamond white here, notably not white). I thought it was okay…then I thought it wasn’t okay. I almost called off our wedding because of a dress-I didn’t want people thinking Jonathan and I had done something we hadn’t. Turns out people don’t care and we still got married. You know that whole “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” thing? I was sweating it.
Okay, now I’ll tag my six….Rachel, Sarah, Wendy. Hm, guess that’s it. Yes, I know it’s only three. I ended chain letters as a child too. It’ll be okay.
