We <3 pickles

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

We were at the grocery store on Sunday night, just picking up a few things. Jonathan reminded me that we were out of pickles. We looked at the various pickle options and thought about how long the last jar of pickles lasted….then we bought the big jar. You know, the one that they put on the bottom shelf? The one you buy if you have four children? It’s in our fridge. We’ll let you know how long it lasts. We like pickles. Any guesses on how long it will take us to consume this jar? The next size up is a BUCKET. That’s just not right.

Thanks Grandpa!

For my birthday, my Papa Roy gave us a gift card to Sears so we could buy our very own drill. It’s a Makita, which I’ve decided is a girl’s name (and it comes in a swanky teal case-definitely for a girl!).

We’ve had some good times drilling holes into different parts of our house:

All set:

I even got a thumbs up from Jonathan!

We’ve also used it to replace some fixtures around the house. What a handy tool! Thanks Papa Roy! You’re a winner!

Brad, Brad, he’s so rad!

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Well, Brad the painter showed up this morning at precisely the time I poured the milk over my cereal (toaster oven and microwave have been removed from the kitchen) to begin painting! Thankfully, he didn’t rush us out of the house and he and his business partner, Dustin, got to work at filling all the holes in the wall so we can have beautifully painted walls. We returned home from work/Bible study tonight to find the first coat of paint has gone up on the ceiling and the east wall of the living room. I promise we’ll post photos once everything is finished up. Last night, we were able to have Rusty (Jonathan’s brother) over for dinner. He and Jonathan also took down the chandelier from the ceiling and cruised the neighborhood looking for a ladder to borrow to install the new ceiling fan. Found the ladder, but we didn’t get the fan up yet. We’ll do that once the painting is finished.
There’s your update from Redmond. Good night!

Breakfast meeting

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

We’re usually up fairly early in the morning. I’m out of bed between 5:15 and 6:00, depending on the morning, and Jonathan’s not far behind. This morning, however, I was feeling a little like the old allergies were kicking in and my head was full and I just couldn’t get it off the pillow. Then I heard it: a breakfast bird meeting of crows on the lawn in our backyard! Oddly enough, rather than compelling me to get out of bed, I snuggled deeper under the covers for refuge. Stinking birds.

Suddenly, I realized….

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I’m just like my mom sometimes.

I laughed this morning at the realization that I am now frequently in our yard at 5:30 in the morning, in my giant white bathrobe or a pair of sweats (often wearing my big yellow plaid rubber boots!), watering the plants or cutting a flower or just quickly pulling a weed I notice from the kitchen. JUST LIKE MY MOM! At first I was afraid I might be scaring the neighbors, but I think they’ll be okay and really, when’s a busy gal like me supposed to find time to survey the situation of the yard and flower beds and garden if I can’t do things like that in the morning? I may need to find a “stealth” black bathrobe though. Poor Jonathan, just sleeping, unaware of his wife’s potential to be the crazy lady in the neighborhood seen in the wee hours of the morning, wandering in the yard. Hey, at least I’m wearing the bathrobe!

More than Conquerors

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

We know that Romans 8 tells us we are more than conquerors, but this weekend, I felt like more than a conqueror-we took control of the yard! We pulled out the weeds, we trimmed back the offending growth and we planted flowers, vegetables and seeds of various kinds! It was awesome!
The day started like many others, with me looking at this:

and thinking, “this tea rose is out of control. We really need to do something about it.”

So we did (and yes, we know we should have been wearing things like actual shoes and not flippy floppers or pants rather than shorts but I really didn’t intend to do more than cut a few branches while killing some time):

and we were left with this:

A whole new view…of sorts.

The tea rose was reduced to rubble….. Now if only we could burn slash piles in Redmond:

It’s going to be a bit of an ugly year for that corner of the yard, but I’m confident that the tea rose will make a strong comeback next year. The problem was that once we started trimming, there were only dead, brown sticks under the leaves and they had to go too. We’ll just call it an opportunity for growth. :-)

And a big THANK YOU to April and Carrie who gave us a Molbak’s giftcard! Here we are with our bounty- we got some tomato plants, some lettuce, a pepper plant, a whole flat of petunias and a rose and a pot and some other stuff too! (thanks for taking the photo, mom) It was pretty fun!

Then we went home and Erik prepped the soil so we could have our little vegetable garden:

Come by in about six weeks and we can give you some fresh veggies!

Cheap.

I like to save money. I like to know that there will be money when I decide to stop saving and want to give to someone in need or buy a  cute dress or a indulge in a cup of coffee that costs more than someone in another country has to spend on food for a week or visit a friend in another country. It’s just the way I am. As a money saving gal, one way I’m trying to explore saving is with the food we cook. Here’s where it gets tricky. I don’t like ground beef and that’s the primary source of protein in many of the recipes I find. It gives me the heebeegeebees for the most part-it just feels weird in my mouth and I don’t like knowing that I didn’t see everything that went into that little plastic package. I enjoy a good burger every now and again, but not any meat in the shape of a loaf or preceding the word helper.  Most of the good, less expensive foods we consumed growing up involved ground meat and the delicious vegetables and fruits that grew in the yard. My mom is a good mom. She is a great cook and was very creative with leftovers and allowed us as much cheese or milk as required to consume said leftovers so we weren’t scarred for life. Mostly she now has three grown children who enjoy cheese and milk. Also, I can’t really eat tofu. It tastes just delightful going down, but the rest of the process gets a little confused and it’s not pleasant for me. We’ve tried cooking with seitan-we now pronounce it satan. It was weird and smelled like cat food when I took it out of the can. I couldn’t get over the cat food smell so poor Jonathan had to eat the whole thing for the greater part of the week while I enjoyed delicious peanut butter and jelly.

We’ve had some great meals lately-sweet potato and black bean burritos, grilled veggies with polenta and some other black bean items. Does anybody have any other awesome (vegetarian/legume) recipes that they love?

Cooking

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Lest you believe I do all the cooking, here is evidence that Jonathan does his fair share too! On Saturday, I worked most of the day and then came home and Joanthan made us a delicious meal of fried rice and some squash. It was excellent.

First, he cooked up some onions and garlic.

Then, he made the sauce. It’s lemon grass (he found lemon grass at the grocer’s!), chili flakes, fish oil and some other seasonings, it was delicious.

Then, he added carrots and peas and rice

The result was delicious!

To add more nutrition to our meal, Jonathan also prepared squash.

He tested it beforehand to make sure it was good.

And IT WAS! It was a great meal and a very nice way to come home after a day of work. Jonathan is a great cook.

Our First Dinner Party

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This past Saturday, we hosted our first dinner party! Kelly did an absolutely amazing job in the kitchen, so I thought I’d post a few photos of the event. Here you go:

Kelly selected Pork Tenderloin with Roasted Apples and Onions as the evening’s main course. Here are the beginnings of the preparation: freshly cut apples. Mmm.

And here’s the pork, fresh from the oven.

Table: set. Salads: plated. Time to eat: yes, yes, it is.

After dinner, Kelly whipped up some cream and a secret ingredient or two as a topping for the dessert…

…which was chocolate cloud cake!

Dessert close-up. I had the last piece for lunch today… until we meet again, chocolate cloud cake. *tink*

Frame it up!

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Tonight we had the good fortune of having our friend Christi and Rachel (my sister) over for dinner. We had a delightful time having supper comprised of sweet potato black bean burritos and green beans. Delcious! After dinner we used the Food Saver and got the extras all set in the freezer for quick weekday meals.
The highlight of the evening (for me) was putting our wedding photos in frames and getting the frames on the wall. It’s like a different house! Now when you come over it will seem like a bit of a shrine to Kelly and Jonathan, but we just had a hard time choosing…..
